Margaritas: A Little History

No one is 100% sure who made the first margarita. There are a few stories, and they’re all fun to hear!

One story says that a bartender in Mexico named Carlos “Danny” Herrera made the first margarita in 1938. A woman named Marjorie King was allergic to most alcohol—except tequila. So, Danny mixed tequila with lime and orange liqueur. And just like that, the margarita was born!

Another story says a woman named Margarita Sames made it at her vacation home in Mexico in 1948. She mixed tequila, lime juice, and Cointreau (an orange-flavored drink) for her friends. Everyone loved it! If you want to know how she made her Margarita’s, check out her exact recipe from a TV interview she did in the 90’s:-

“First, you must use a good tequila—one that is authentic, made in Jalisco, Mexico. I prefer a white tequila, not any of this gold stuff. No blenders ever. Shake it or stir the drink in a pitcher. Do not strain. Use Cointreau, not the less expensive and less flavorful Triple Sec. The original Margarita recipe: 3 jiggers tequila, “or you can do 2,” 1 jigger Cointreau and 1 jigger lime juice. Serve over ice cubes, “not those little chips.” “Most people over-salt their Margarita glasses. I take a piece of lime and go all around the rim of the glass with it. Then I put regular kitchen salt on a paper towel. Just put the glass down into the salt and then pick it straight up.”

No matter who made it first, the margarita has become a favourite drink for people all over the world.

The Basic Margarita: What’s In It?

To make a great margarita, you don’t need a lot of stuff. Just three main ingredients:

Tequila – This is the main part of the drink. It’s strong and tasty. Try to use “100% agave” tequila. That means it’s pure and made the right way.

Fresh Lime Juice – This gives the drink a tangy, citrus flavor. Don’t use bottled lime juice if you can help it. Fresh is always better!

Orange Liqueur – This adds a little sweetness and orange flavor. You can use brands like Cointreau, Triple Sec, or Grand Marnier.

You can also add a little simple syrup or agave syrup if you want it sweeter.

The Ultimate Margarita Mix:

The best margarita has the right balance. A good rule to follow is the 3:2:1 rule:

  • 3 parts tequila
  • 2 parts lime juice
  • 1 part orange liqueur

This makes sure your drink isn’t too strong, too sour, or too sweet. But everyone’s taste is different! If you like it sweeter, add a little more orange liqueur or syrup. If you like it more tart, add more lime.

Ok, enough jibber jabber, lets get to some recipes:-
