The Detail That Turns a Wedding Drink Into a Talking Point

The espresso martini is already the most requested cocktail at almost every wedding reception we deliver. But there is a difference between handing a guest a well-made drink and handing them one with their names printed on it.

That is exactly what the Ripples machine does. It prints custom designs, names, monograms, illustrations and even photographs directly onto the crema of an espresso martini, in real time, at the bar. No stencils. No dusting. A food-grade ink printer that turns the top of every glass into a personalised moment the guest was not expecting.

We have been running Ripples at wedding receptions, engagement parties and brand activations for some time now, and the reaction from guests is always the same: they stop, they look, and then they take a photograph before they take a sip. That is the kind of detail that does not just elevate a drinks service. It becomes part of the memory of the evening.

What Is the Ripples Machine?

The Ripple Maker II Pro is a cocktail printer originally developed for coffee art and adapted for use on any drink with a foam or crema surface. It uses food-safe, flavourless ink cartridges to print high-resolution images onto the top of a drink in under ten seconds.

At Mr Flavour, we bring the Ripples machine as part of our premium espresso martini service. It sits at the bar station alongside our bartenders and integrates into the service flow without slowing anything down. While one bartender shakes and pours, the Ripples machine prints the design onto each glass before it is handed to the guest.

The machine connects to a tablet where we preload your chosen designs before the event. You can change the design mid-service if you want, for instance switching from a welcome message during the drinks reception to the couple’s names during the evening party.

What Can You Print on an Espresso Martini?

Anything that works as a high-contrast image. The prints we run most often at weddings include:

  • The couple’s names. The most popular option. “Sunil & Pooja” inside a heart, the couple’s initials intertwined, or a simple serif-typeset monogram.
  • Wedding rings and symbols. Interlocking rings, a date, a venue silhouette, or a motif from the invitation suite.
  • Illustrations and portraits. A line-drawn illustration of the couple, a caricature, or a scene from their story.
  • Photographs. The machine can reproduce an actual photograph of the couple onto the crema. The resolution is surprisingly sharp.
  • Brand logos. For corporate events, product launches and brand activations, we print the company logo or campaign artwork onto every drink that leaves the bar.

We typically prepare three to five designs per event and rotate them through the service so guests receive different prints throughout the night. It creates a quiet collectibility: guests compare drinks, photograph each variation, and share them without being asked to.

Why the Espresso Martini Is the Perfect Canvas

Not every cocktail works with the Ripples machine. The printer needs a stable foam surface with enough density to hold the ink without it bleeding or sinking. The espresso martini is ideal because the crema, when properly shaken, produces a thick, even, pale-gold layer that holds a print cleanly for several minutes.

Other drinks that work well include flat whites, cappuccinos, Guinness (for Irish-themed events), chai lattes and certain nitro cocktails. But the espresso martini remains the most requested by a significant margin, partly because the contrast between the dark drink and the pale crema makes every print stand out.

Getting the crema right is the critical step. An under-shaken espresso martini produces a thin, uneven foam that breaks apart. Our bartenders dry-shake first (without ice) to build the foam, then hard-shake with ice to chill and dilute. The result is a dense, stable crema that holds a Ripples print from the moment it leaves the bar to the last sip.

How It Works on the Day

Our bartender pouring fresh espresso martinis at the bar during a wedding reception. The double-pour technique helps build the crema.

We handle the entire process. Here is what the setup looks like at a typical wedding reception:

Before the event. We work with you (or your wedding planner or designer) to finalise the print designs. If you have a monogram, a logo, or artwork from your stationery suite, we can adapt it for the Ripples format. We proof the designs digitally and preload them onto the machine before we arrive.

During setup. The Ripples Maker II Pro is integrated into the bar station. It takes up roughly the same space as a coffee machine and connects to our power supply. Our bartenders test the first prints during setup to make sure the alignment, resolution and contrast are correct on the live crema.

During service. The machine runs alongside the bartender workflow. Shake, strain, print, serve. Each print takes under ten seconds, so it does not create a bottleneck, even at high-volume receptions. For events above 150 guests, we typically run two bartenders alongside the machine to keep the flow smooth.

After service. We break down and remove everything. There is nothing for you to manage.

What Guests Actually Do When They See It

We have watched this play out at dozens of events now. The first guest to receive a printed espresso martini pauses, looks at it, and immediately shows the person next to them. Within minutes there is a queue forming, not because the bar is slow, but because people want to see the print happen.

It creates a natural talking point that does not rely on a sign, a hashtag wall, or a prompt. Guests photograph their drinks and share them organically. For couples who care about their wedding being remembered for the details rather than the spectacle, the Ripples espresso martini is one of the highest-impact, lowest-effort additions to the bar service.

For corporate clients and brand activations, the dynamic is different but equally effective. Printing a company logo onto every cocktail at a product launch turns the drinks service into a brand touchpoint. Every glass that leaves the bar is carrying the brand, and every photograph a guest posts is unpaid media.
